Quicktrack Interview

As you may know, over the summer I was lucky enough to be a part of the Quicktrack program. The four of us made animations that were projected onto buildings during the 2011 GIRAF Film Festival. Each one of us were interviewed in a interesting location/scenario. Here is my interview.

The Monstrocity!

From July to the end of September I was employed as one of the four Quicktrack participants at Quickdraw Animation Society. We were hired to create an animation that functions as a loop and that will be projected onto the side of a building. These animations were to promote the GIRAF animation festival that Quickdraw holds every year.

My idea was to play with the scale of the projection and create a series of monsters that interact with each other. I was inspired by classic Japanese and American monster movies, urban legends and graffiti art. I wanted my animation to be playful, colorful and entertaining.

Production was fast and I found I had to work quick and come up with ideas on the spot. After I was finished production we sent out animations off to 6 Degrees sound studio. I was blown away by the amazing job they did.

The Monstrocity was eventually screened November 5th at the Jubilee Auditorium at the Log Drivers Waltz Gala. It was an amazing event. I felt honored to participate in this residency alongside so many talented people.

It has been awhile since I posted anything, so here is one of my line tests form a project that I have been working on for the past two months. I can't show you much more than this. The final animation will be done in November just in time for the GIRAF film festival.

Mass Hysteria Comic

This comic is about hysteria in the 1700's. I am drawing on the vampire myth and common stories around that time. It is completely done with linocut prints in black and blue block printing ink. I decided to drop the color I had in my rough because I felt that it would be more dramatic when the husband appears.

The Harlem Globetrotters 145 The Washington Generals 68

The Harlem Globetrotters managed to bring the Washington Generals to a new low in basketball history today. From tip off to final buzzer the Generals were defeated by skill, speed and borderline cheating of the Globetrotters. The Generals resembled five stooges, often standing and watching while the Trotters trounced them with their antics and showboating. "When they start doing a reem, we don't mess 'em up. The quicker they get it over with, the quicker we get the ball." Herman Klotz, the coach of the Generals said before being hit with a bucket of water.
Goose Tatum of the Globetrotters is the star of the night with 64 points, 12 assists and 4 pantsing.

I chose an article about the NFL and brain damage. We are to connect the article with one of the seven deadly sins. Players are too proud to leave the game when suffering concussions, this leads to serious neurological problems later in life. Done on scratch board.

Here is a project using only silhouette's. It is of a story of a boy who has to climb a glass mountain to save a princess. The first page is the cover and the second page is a spread. The boy fastens paws from a lynx to his hands and feet and skips over dead knights to climb the mountain.

The Staret

I finally got my project back the other day. I should have taken a picture before I submitted the project but you know how it goes.
I suppose I should explain this guy a bit. I based this character on Rasputin. He is a Staret associated with the Russian Orthodox Church. Starets are mystics with powers given to them from the Holy Ghost. They can heal the sick, predict the future and act as spiritual leaders. They are not directly appointed by the Church but are recognized by believers. I thought that an individual with this sort power would most likely become corrupt, therefor this is a dark Staret.

Sketchbook paintings! This was a three week project. We were to take mundane daily activities from our lives and sketch/paint them (maybe, I'll post them later). The second part of the project was to take three of these sketches and make them exciting and interesting. The first painting is of me having a profound religious experience from coffee in the morning. The second is of me walking home after school and being stalked by ninjas. The last one is of me drifting off to sleep in space with my feet sticking out of my space suit.

Here is a morph project that I recently got back from my teacher. We were to morph a classmate into something that fits with their personality. Here I morphed Sarah into a mad scientist. She is into jewelery design and enjoys the aspects behind it. I found connections between that and mad scientists...well that is what I said in the crit. I kind of just wanted to draw a mad scientist. Shhhh!
